I always believed that even the most beautiful destinations can be divided into two categories – the ones that when you wake up in a new city or country and open your eyes you know right away where you are, and the ones that don’t seem that different from other places (well, at least not from the very start). Example? I could confuse Paris with Berlin or Milan. I could never confuse London or Rome with any other city. And I could never confuse Cancun (or Playa del Carmen for that matter) with any other place in the world as well.
I visited Mexico 3 times in my life. The first time I was just a kid when my parents took me to Acapulco. But when I grow up I chose a region that was a little more energetic – Yucatan to be more precise. I can’t believe how cities such as Cancun and Playa del Carmen could change so much in only 5 years. I visited both of them in 2010 when I traveled there with my mom, and then in 2015 when my newly married hubby and I chose it as our final honeymoon destination. Maybe the difference was in my travel buddies – I bet you can imagine that traveling with your mom and with your husband can be very different J
Anyway – I loved Mexico. From the culture, the music, the food, the climate, the language and of course the people. I love that from the second I wake up I know exactly where I am and. We took our time and browsed through Cancun, eat in the best local spots and spend our days at the beach. Then the evenings were all about Playa del Carmen and it’s night life. We saw the Chichen Itza (obviously I saw it twice and I hope I won’t visit it again – enough is enough). We saw in the cenotes and with my second favorite underwater creature – the manatees. It was incredible. Would I like to return to Mexico? Of course! Will I return? I hope I won’t for a while. The world is so big. Three times is enough 🙂
